Types of therapy

  • CBT is built on a simple but powerful idea: the way we think and act affects the way we feel. In CBT, you and your therapist work together to identify thought and behavioral patterns that may be making life harder and practice replacing them with more balanced, realistic thoughts or effective behaviors. It's structured and goal-focused, so you will leave sessions with concrete tools and a plan for practice on your own. CBT has strong research support for anxiety, depression, phobias, and many other concerns.

  • DBT was originally developed for people who experience emotions very intensely — to the point where feelings can be overwhelming or lead to harmful behaviors. It combines acceptance (learning to acknowledge and tolerate difficult emotions) with change (building practical skills to handle them better). DBT teaches four core skill sets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It's especially helpful for people who struggle with intense mood swings, impulsive behavior, self-harm, or relationship difficulties.

  • DBT-C brings the core ideas of DBT to children — typically ages 6 to 12 — using language, activities, and examples that make sense to a younger mind. Because kids this age are still developing, parents play a central role in DBT-C by learning the same skills alongside their child so they can coach and reinforce them at home. Sessions often use games and visual tools to teach emotional awareness and coping skills. DBT-C is a good fit for children who have big emotional reactions, frequent meltdowns, or difficulty managing change, frustration, and disappointment.
